How to carve telemark turns takes a lot of practice but with these tips in parts. You will improve especially on hard packed snow or icy conditions.
Telemark technique starts with a good lead change and how to put most of our body weight on the outside ski. This was tip #1
Tip #2 focussed on how to add more pressure on the outside ski by angulating. This is the key to go from carving on groomers to carving on hard pack or icy conditions
For Tip #3 I will talk about how to use the inside edge of our rear ski. This will help us create more edging but also it will free more space to angulate more.

Exercise #1 practice on the flat
Exercise #2 use the inside knee in a slipping motion. Focus on the suttle movements needed to put angulate the inside knee.
Practice the inside knee movement in different situations.
Common mistake. focusing too much on the inside knee and not creating hip angulation.

In this series of telemark videos, I’m going to give you my best tips to improve your carving.
So that you can go from a intermidiate parrallel telemark turn to an advanced carved turn.
By loading most of your weight on the front foot, we are making sure that we have the most pressure on this outside ski.
But if we are not using the inside ski, we are missing out on more grip and a better general position.
To edge the inside ski, we need to move the inside knee. It acts like a lever.
This movement of the inside knee will be the starting point to get both legs working together.
So it will create better knee angulation for both knee and it will put our legs in a position to augment the hip angulation.

Remember that the inside knee is just a way to increase edging but that tip one and two are still the foundation to create that ski edging traction.

On alpine skis, they will sometimes put 100% of the weight on their outside ski. On telemark, because of the telemark squat, we can't do that. But overloading the front ski will really make the ski edge bite into hard packed snow.
HOW
To do this, practise your lead change Moving you chin over your outside ski on a low incline slope, such as a cat track or a VERY easy green run. As soon as the lead change happens, load the front ski by moving your shoulders over your outside ski. You will feel how strongly the ski wants to bite into the snow and how strongly it wants to carve.

Having hands too low at the end of the turn. I give plenty of exercises to practice how to use your hands from a quiet upper body to a dynamic hand movement, bringing your hand up high in front of you at the end of the turn.
These hand movements and upper body stability will really help with the position of your shoulders throught out the telemark turn.
Telemark skiing is a downhill skiing technique with a binding that allows for the heel to lift of the ski.
